Indirect Prompt Injection & Data Egress Defense in Enterprise LLM Agents

SECTOR: AI Software & Enterprise Knowledge Systems|intelligence. security. innovation.
Controlled Laboratory Environment DisclosureThis technical case study was executed within isolated research testbeds (Parasym Security Research Range / AI Defense Lab / Industrial Security Lab). It simulates authentic enterprise architectures without representing a specific commercial client engagement.

01.Context & Authorized Scope

Executed within the Parasym AI Defense Lab in an isolated evaluation harness modeling an enterprise knowledge assistant. The assistant retrieves markdown documents from an internal vector database (RAG) and summarizes corporate policy and vendor documentation for authenticated employees upon query.

02.Security Question Tested

Can an untrusted external document ingested into an enterprise vector store override the assistant's system instructions and trigger unauthorized transmission of internal session context?

03.Testing Approach & Methodology

Operators staged a simulated third-party vendor invoice containing hidden adversarial instructions formatted with zero-width whitespace and semantic override phrasing. An operator then prompted the assistant to summarize recent vendor documentation.

04.Observed Technical Evidence

When retrieving the poisoned document chunk, the unhardened baseline model interpreted the injected payload as authoritative system instructions, attempting to construct an image markdown embed targeted at an external receiver domain to leak system context.

<retrieved_context_chunk untrusted="true">
  ... [Payload sanitized and neutral text passed without execution privileges] ...
</retrieved_context_chunk>

05.Demonstrated Impact & Operational Assumptions

In an unhardened RAG system, an adversary who can introduce a document into an internal repository could hijack an internal AI agent to exfiltrate private corporate documents or user queries. (Operational Assumptions: Ingestion pipeline accepted unvalidated third-party markdown without sanitization, and the client application permitted rendering of arbitrary external image links).

06.Engineering Remediation

Parasym designed a multi-layer architectural defense: 1. Semantic boundary isolation with strict delimiter encoding separating system directives, retrieved context chunks, and user prompts. 2. Dual-LLM guardrail classifier to inspect retrieved chunks for instruction-override syntax prior to generative context ingestion. 3. Content Security Policy (CSP) headers and client-side rendering restrictions forbidding dynamic external image embeds.

07.Verified Retest Outcome

The dual-layer defense was retested against an evaluation dataset of 150 adversarial prompt injection variants in the lab range, successfully blocking indirect command execution across all 150 tested variants without impeding normal document summarization.
